Boys Soccer—MAC Champions!

Boys varsity soccer capped off a historic season with a 1-0 victory over Georgetown Day School in the finals of the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAC) Tournament. The Frogs were undefeated in league play—finishing the regular season 9-0-1. Thursday’s victory was hard-fought and well-earned—the boys weathered the initial flurry of GDS chances, defended well as a unit, and relied on their in-form striker. Daniel Lustbader ’22 rose highest and looped a header over the hapless GDS goalkeeper with eight minutes left in the first half to give the Frogs the lead. He also scored in the semi-final game against Flint Hill, which was decided on penalty kicks. Head Coach, Mohan Telfer had this to say,

“The boys came together in August (during pre-season) and bought into a system of play that required everyone to do their part. It might be a cliché, but no one player is larger than the whole—we have no superstars on this squad. We’ve played with that mentality all season, and it showed again today with this result.”
Throughout the season, the Frogs’ mantra was always to keep a “clean-sheet” (shut-out). They managed to concede only seven goals, while amassing 42 goals in league play. Grit and determination were the hallmarks of this squad—with an offensive flair that made the Frogs hard to beat. The team will savor this “MAC double”—winning the tournament and finishing top—for the next day or two. However, the boys are already looking ahead to Monday’s training session in preparation for the DC State (DCSAA) Tournament next week.

This team is determined to write another chapter in their story—in hopes of joining the teams that preceded them in Maret’s history books!

Under Mohan Telfer’s tutelage, the Frogs have won four MAC titles total, securing three in the last five years—the Frogs last won the MAC double in 2018.
